Well, Duh.

On Al Mohler's blog yesterday, he cites a Time magazine article on Student Ministry. Evidently the article has made a discovery that we've been talking about since the '80s: evangelical youth ministry is trending more toward substance and away from a "sugarcoated" approach. Something about youth ministry handing out big doses of Bible Study instead of the 'Coke and a Joke' philosophy of ministry that permeated the Reagan years.
Mohler points out that it is interesting that Time Magazine found the article interesting…
It's even more interesting that anyone thinks this is some kind of new revelation.

From the Time article by someone named Christian Smith:
The vast majority of teens? I asked probing questions that simply didn’t have factual “right or wrong” answers at the last Dive and heard more thoughtful responses than I’ve heard from groups of adults in similar discussions. I’m not sure we have many people of any age sitting in our pews who actually know what they believe and why they believe it.
But then, that’s probably just me …

I don’t think it’s just you. There are lots of times adults say things like ‘well the Bible says….’, and I’m like “Oh, really? Where?” And the typical response is mostly something along the ‘my pastor/grandmother/dad/sunday school teacher says…’ or ‘that’s what I’ve heard’ line.
For a little over 40 years now (which is not very long), Southern Baptists have prided ourselves on teaching scripture/doctrine and ‘educating’ our people in what Scripture says.
I definitely think we’ve made *some* progress, but we’ve got a VERY long way to go…

and the survey says: “duh”
Imagine a group of teens who were well grounded in the scripture. What would happen to the community if our teens actually knew what they beleived?
