and the survey says: "duh"

Imagine a group of teens who were well grounded in the scripture. What would happen to the community if our teens actually knew what they beleived?

I don't think it's just you. There are lots of times adults say things like 'well the Bible says....', and I'm like "Oh, really? Where?" And the typical response is mostly something along the 'my pastor/grandmother/dad/sunday school teacher says...' or 'that's what I've heard' line.

For a little over 40 years now (which is not very long), Southern Baptists have prided ourselves on teaching scripture/doctrine and 'educating' our people in what Scripture says.

I definitely think we've made *some* progress, but we've got a VERY long way to go...

From the Time article by someone named Christian Smith:

<blockquote>
The vast majority of teens who call themselves Christians haven't been well educated in religious doctrine and therefore don't really know what they believe,
</blockquote>

The vast majority of teens? I asked probing questions that simply didn't have factual "right or wrong" answers at the last Dive and heard more thoughtful responses than I've heard from groups of adults in similar discussions. I'm not sure we have many people of any age sitting in our pews who actually know what they believe and why they believe it.

But then, that's probably just me ...
