White American Jesus
Posted by tom cottar under theology
In October of 2002, I attended a YS conference in Dallas. At one of the late night sessions with somewhere around 150 other guys/girls we watched two films. The first one was White American Jesus. It was a 7-minute satirical look into, well, me. And probably you. At the end of the film, I remember a good chunk of people storming out. These (maybe 40-50) people were ticked. I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps the Jesus in the film is the Jesus they worship. Or maybe the Jesus in the film is completely NOT the Jesus they worship and were ticked that he was on the chopping block of satire. I'm pretty certain that many people, even those that stayed for the discussion, were a bit uneasy about the way Jesus was portrayed…especially when the young black man comes into the scene and Jesus dismisses him saying, …..well, you'll just have to watch it to find out.
As you watch it, remember there are two worlds present: the one we live in and the one we wish we live in. What do you think this little trifle of a film says about us? About me? About you?
Go watch White American Jesus. Then come back and rant.

That was hilarious! And all too accurate at times. No rant, but I also really enjoyed the theme song at the end.

yeah, I thought it was hilarious…and pretty accurate as well. At least it started some healthy discussions about our cultural biases and the way we conservative-evangelical-southern-Anglo Americans do things…
I think it’s easy to point out cultural prejudices in other cultures….it’s harder to see (and stomach) them among our own…
