Quotable Mondays
"IF you're going to win the world for Christ, you're going to have to sit in the smoking section." -Neil Cole
Good quote from the guy whom I'm going to get to have lunch with tomorrow. Check out his latest book Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens. I'll be picking his brain (along with a [...]

My Kinda Lover
On my drive into the church today, Billy Squier came on the radio. More specifically, his 80's hit "My Kinda Lover". And I found myself singing along in worship to Jesus. Yeah, I'm a freak. But the lyrics caught me by surprise:
You got me runnin babyYou give me somethin way beyond revenueYou put the magic [...]

Running….out…of…….gas.
I'm at home sick today. I've had this feeling before many times, and I know it's coming, so I'm trying to nip it before it gets me farther down. So, here I am. Drinking my green tea/honey/echinacea/tabasco concoction (with a Lo-Han-Quo chaser), watching Val Kilmer's interpretation of The Saint, and listening to a little Zakk [...]

The Theology of MySpace
Last Friday afternoon, just before our [amazing] weekend event, a nearby church held a funeral mass for one of our local skater guys, Dex, who died from huffing freon. Some of the students in our ministry attended it before showing up to help us set up here. They were visibly moved. Obviously, we have some [...]

Totally Consumed
In 8 hours something beautiful will happen. The doors to our youth center will open wide and students will begin to flood in. The videos will be rolling, the music will be kicking, and laughter, excitement, and hugs will fill in the gaps. More than one hundred and twenty students (plus adults and staff) will be [...]

The Gospel of Def Leppard
Rise up.
Gather 'round.
Rock this place to the ground…and remember: it's better to burn out than fade away.
At least that's the gospel according to Joe Elliot, lead singer for Def Leppard, arena big-hair rockers from across the pond that helped mold my young skull of mush when I was 14. Pyromania changed my life…and gave [...]

The Struggle of 9:43
During a recent 6-mile run, two great things happened to me.
First, I shaved some time off my run (6 miles in 58:17–9:43 per mile). Running is a sport in which you have to be dedicated to seeing modest gains. I am. Especially for an [almost] old guy.
Second, I had a revelation why I'm liking [...]

Quotable Mondays
Ahhhh….the smell of Monday.
Triple espresso-laden venti mild java in my bloodstream.
Some Eric Johnson on the iPod to remind me to practice more.
And a little Fyodor Dostoyevsky to ease the brain back into gear:
"Beauty is not only a terrible thing, it is also a mysterious thing. There God and the Devil [...]

Super[Bowl] Idiocy
Alright. It's Saturday…before SuperBowl Sunday, and I really don't have time for this, but it's cold outside and I can't get out and run just yet.
It seems that the NFL has cracked down on some Vegas casinos and at least one church for having a SuperBowl party. The issues? Charging admission, advertising the event, using [...]
