For a metroneck like me…things just get better and better. If I know anything about Heaven, I know there will be at least 2 things there: coffee and fishing. Now, thanks to Jesus and Strike King, we can all have a little piece of that Kingdom here and now.

Strike King is coming out with new Coffee Tubes (coffee-flavored), which will be in stores Nov. 1. Here’s the story behind them:

Troy Gibson of Strike King Lures has been fishing since he was old enough to walk. And as a lure designer, he always pays attention to the forage fish in a particular body of water. Two years ago, Gibson competed in a Bassmaster Central Open on Texas’ Lake Sam Rayburn. At the end of the day, while his co-angler went to get his vehicle and back the boat trailer in the water, Gibson ate a package of crackers and sipped the last cup of coffee from his thermos. Naturally, a bunch of bream swam up and started chomping on them.

Then he finished his coffee and threw what was left in his cup in the water. The bream left the crackers and went to his coffee. "The bream left the crackers to go to the coffee grounds," said Gibson. "Then it turned into a feeding frenzy. Instead of just a few fish, it turned into 15 or 20. They looked like piranhas chewing those coffee grounds." Hmm.

Later, at home, he took some coffee grounds out to his boat dock and waited for the automatic fish feeder to go off. When it did, the water went nuts with feeding fish as it always did. He walked 5 yards away and threw the grounds in the water – and all the fish stopped eating the feed and ran over to the coffee.

From those observations have come the Strike King Coffee Tubes, which initially will be available in 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 inches and eight colors. The coffee oil, in which the tubes are made, not only give the lures a natural, realistic color, but also have an attractive scent and entice bass to hold on to the hook longer, resulting in better hookups and more fish caught. (duh)

Sweet Jesus, if now they’d only figure out how to incorporate a coffee-scented lure with a built-in mp3 player. Maybe something that entices fish with some Radiohead or Satriani could land me a lunker.
