Smile, my friends, because today is QM. Today’s snarky comment comes from the Internet Monk himself, Michael Spencer, regarding the ubiquitous Joel Osteen:

"Osteen is a Gospel preacher like Col. Sanders is an army officer."

Brevity is the soul of wit, my friends. But if you need more, he goes on to say:

"Joel doesn’t preach the Gospel. At all.

At the end of his talks on positive thinking and how you have the destiny to have a new house and a new car, he has a sinner’s prayer. Jesus is mentioned, but Osteen’s preaching in a year doesn’t give you enough information about Jesus to know if he means the savior or the outfielder.

Osteen’s motives are another story. He’s simply Tony Robbins with Praise music. His hero is Norman Vincent Peale. It’s a Christless, sinless, crossless, repentance-less message about everything turning out OK.

…The Golden Calf had better theology."

I’l admit: I’ve watched Joel a time or two. And he seems to do a great job of preaching everything he knows each week–it’s just not much. To be honest, I can’t really tell if I’ve seen 4 separate ‘sermons’ or the same one four times. But maybe that’s me…

Comment if you dare.
