The Story of Stuff
Posted by tom cottar under theology
At this year’s SXSW in Austin, the 20-minute animated film The Story of Stuff earned itself an award. It’s actually a GREAT little film…and pretty educational, as well. It explores our capitalist addiction to ’stuff’. As the industry calls it, from ‘extraction’ to ‘disposal’. As I watched in online (from my new MacBook Pro, no less), several thoughts struck me:
1. Although oversimplified in the film, we cannot continue to run a linear extraction-consumption-disposal process on this little finite planet we call home.
2. 99% of the ’stuff’ we buy is thrown away within 6 months of consumption (purchase).
3. We produce ’stuff’ that’s designed for the dump… to keep us on the consumption treadmill.
4. The prophetic words of Tyler Durden ring true: "The stuff you own, ends up owning you."
